Google to disable Sync in older Chrome versions

Google announced that in early 2025, Chrome Sync will be disabled in Chrome versions older than four years.

Chrome Sync enables users to save and sync their bookmarks, passwords, history, open tabs, settings, user preferences, and even Google Pay data. In addition, this function automatically logs you into your Gmail, YouTube, Search, and other Google accounts.

“Starting in early 2025, Chrome Sync (using and saving data in your Google Account) will stop working on versions of Chrome that are more than four years old. If you are on a version of Chrome that is older than four years old, you may begin to see the error message “Update Chrome to start sync” or “Update Chrome to keep using the Chrome data in your Google Account.””

Google doesn’t specify the ‘threshold’ version making your Chrome browser outdated. Chrome users willing to continue using Chrome Sync to sync data across all devices connected to a Google account are advised to update the browser to the latest version.

“If you are unable to update your Browser to a version that is less than four years old, you will not be able to use the Chrome Sync feature on that device any longer.” – Google.

In November 2021, following the release of Chrome 96, Google ceased support for Chrome Sync in Chrome 48 and older versions. Earlier, in March 2021, Google prohibited third-party Chromium-based browsers from using private APIs to integrate Chrome-exclusive features, including Chrome Sync and Click to Call.
