Internet Completely Shut Down Across Afghanistan

According to specialists from NetBlocks and Cloudflare, on September 29, 2025, a complete internet shutdown was imposed in Afghanistan. Analysts reported that internet service providers in the country were disconnected in stages, and telephone service is also experiencing disruptions. This is how the country’s authorities are combating immorality.

Taliban representatives (designated a terrorist organization and banned in the Russian Federation) began imposing the first shutdowns several weeks ago. In mid-September, the authorities shut off fiber-optic internet in the northern and eastern provinces, including Balkh, Baghlan, Badakhshan, Kunduz, Nangarhar, and Takhar.

“This measure was taken to prevent immorality, and an alternative will be built in the country to meet people’s needs,” Haji Attaullah Zaid, a provincial government spokesperson, told the Associated Press at the time.

Now the internet in the country has been completely shut down for fiber-optic and mobile internet subscribers.

“At present, the internet in Afghanistan is completely shut down as the Taliban authorities take measures to enforce morality,” NetBlocks reports.

According to media reports, the internet shutdown and mobile connectivity issues have paralyzed the operations of businesses, financial institutions, educational institutions, and government agencies. It is reported that due to the outage, all flights at Kabul International Airport were canceled.

Moreover, according to the UN, the shutdown dealt a blow to vital humanitarian operations aimed at assisting remote Afghan communities affected by the devastating earthquake that occurred last month.
