The Raspberry Pi developers announced a new touch component for those who use single-board computers to build compact touchscreen devices. The 5-inch Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 offers a 720Ă—1280 resolution, an IPS multitouch screen, and native support for Raspberry Pi OS.
It is reported that the new product will cost 40 US dollars and is already available from resellers.
“The capacitive touchscreen works right out of the box and has full Linux driver support. That means no manual calibration, no digging into device trees, and no battling incompatible touch controllers,” writes Raspberry Pi’s Director of Software, Gordon Hollingworth.

The 5-inch display is the “little brother” of the 7-inch Pi Touch Display 2 priced at $60, which the company released last year.
Both displays have a resolution of 720×1280 pixels, but the 7-inch model offers slightly wider viewing angles (85 degrees versus 80 degrees for the 5-inch version). Both are compatible with all Pi boards starting with the Raspberry Pi 1 B+ from 2014 (except the Raspberry Pi Zero) and draw power from the board’s GPIO header, while video is transmitted over a ribbon cable connected to the DSI port.
The 5-inch version can recognize up to five simultaneous touches and does not require a separate power source when connected to a Raspberry Pi.
Raspberry Pi OS automatically detects the installed display and suggests using the Squeekboard on-screen keyboard for input without connecting external peripherals.
The developers believe that the 5-inch display would be a good fit, for example, for small smart home projects that require a control screen.
Note that in addition to the 5- and 7-inch Touch Display 2 models, Raspberry Pi also offers a full-fledged 15.6-inch display for $100, intended for people who use Pi boards (or Raspberry Pi 400/500 devices) as regular desktops.
